My Personal Story
In the summer of 1990, shortly after I was licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I was enjoying another sunny, pleasant Northern California day outside my office. A colleague was telling me the most incredible story about a psychologist in Southern California. My friend has recently returned from a presentation by Roger Callahan, Ph.D. and she was very excited about what she had seen and heard. "There's a psychlogist who is curing phobias in 5 minutes." As I said, it was an incredible claim, and I mean incredible truly in the sense of lacking credibility. This claim was on the order and magnitude of miracles.
As skeptical as anyone
I am as skeptical as anyone and such a claim was unacceptable on face value. Sure, I accepted that miracles do happen, and had already been though some powerful healing experiences. But I could not swallow that a psychologist was able to accomplish such feats on a regular and repeatable basis. Still I was intrigued and wanted to know more.
Curious as I am , I sought more information about this alleged miracle worker, Roger Callahan. Sure enough, he claimed 5 minute phobia cures and more. And I could learn from him, for a price. A big price; $10,000. Whew, I was just starting my psychotherapy practice, recently completed three and one half years of grueling and expensive graduate training in transpersonal counseling psychology plus another three years of internships. I had been exposed to a lot of different healing approaches. Spiritual and Shamanic practices, Neurolinguistic Programming, Hypnotherapy, Holotropic Breath Work. Plus, I was just underway in what turned out to be a decade of training and supervised practice of Narrative Therapy. I had to pause from buying more expensive training. So I put this mysterious new approach on the back burner of my mind.
Eight years passed. I became disgruntled with talk therapy and believed there had to be more efficient ways to help persons improvement their emotional and spiritual life. I began searching again, having wound down with my work in Narrative Therapy. Deciding to take a look at some professional magazines I had not seen in a few years, I opened up the lastest copy of The Family Therapy Networker. Displayed there in a full page ad was a man claiming miraculous changes with a simple procedure. As I read the ad copy, I realized this was the same process described by Roger Callahan. Eight years later, here was another man promising fantastic, still incredible changes. However there was one HUGE difference. The price. The price was $10,000 LESS. The price was ZERO to learn this healing technique.
Gary Craig was the author of that ad and he was giving away his training manual on the internet. Feverish to get online and download the manual, I did so that afternoon. In the evening, when I had a some time alone, I lay in my bed ready to try out this new process called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). I had spent that afternoon racing through the manual, starting from the beginning and reading through, as Craig insisted for best results, I had made it almost to the end; had read testimonies from federal prisoners who described changed lives. (and other impressive case which you will read in the manual). That meant I had passed through the nearly 20 pages which, in fact, detailed the steps of applying the EFT tapping, and the "faqs" and case studies. And now I lay in my bed, by myself, expectant, hopeful, and doubtful.
Relief from back pain
I directed my attention to my back pain. MY back pain which I had lived with for longer that I could remember. My chiropractic treatment for a spinal disorder started around 1992. As a sufferer of chronic back pain, over years of treatment I had come to be able to monitor and assess the levels of pain to which I had previously been unconscious.
My earliest memory was of agony from high school football. I recalled thinking that the pain in my back was due to a personal weakness. Nothing to complain about, just keep working harder and get over it. My sister's memory went back farther than mine. She recalled my complaints during kindergarten. Sitting on the floor cross legged "like an Indian" caused my back to hurt. I never thought something was wrong with my spine. But thirty five years later, I went through intensive corrective chiropractic adjustments which took the curve out of my upper back.
The manual lay beside me on the bed, open to the Basic Recipe pages. I had read through these pages a couple of times and now here was the moment of truth. My mind was racing with the possibilities. And I was preparing myself for a likely disappointment. After all, ten years of chiropractic care, many different approaches to pain management, and I was still living with daily pain, albeit, much less than ever before. So with the manual by my side, I started going through the steps. The Set Up: "Even though I have this Back Pain, I deeply and completely accept myself." Next page; tapping the points. Reading as fast as I could to get through the points. Then, that crazy Gamut Procedure. And the Sequence again. Made it through my very first time of tapping. Preparing to wait and observe. But no waiting was required.
Slowly and steadily, beginning at the base of my spine, rising up my spine, warmer and warmer. Steadily, unmistakingly rising up my spine, was this warm and relaxing energy. All the way up my back and into my neck and spreading out into my head. It was real; I knew the sensations from other healing experiences. I was feeling, warm, relaxed, peaceful and very excited. I could hardly wait for my wife to get home so I could tell her all about it.
But there's more to this story. The next day I was scheduled for one of my 2-3 times weekly chiropracitic appointments. And I forgot to attend! This had never happened before. When my next appointment time came around, I went and had my regular adjustment. After the procedures, my Doc said with some surprise, "You hardly needed an adjustment today." Something he had never said in over 8 years of treatment. The fact is, my back had not hurt for those days following my first self-administered EFT session, which was a completely unique outcome.
